Many years later, after Teresa's death, Franz comes to Milan with a little daughter. Milan suspects that Franz knows about his long-time affair with Teresa and that the daughter might be Milan's own. When the girl dies from a grave illness, Milan challenges Franz, but the latter refuses to shoot him at the duel.
